Greenhouse Foundations

As with all foundations, it is very important that greenhouse foundations are completely flat, level and square.

Given that a low threshold door is now standard on most models, installing directly onto soil isn’t favourable. Soil or grit will fill up the door track and interfere with the smooth operation of the doors. On larger/heavier models, you also face the risk of the corner anchors subsiding and causing further problems.

Our advice is to opt for one of the foundation options below.

Greenhouse foundations

Types of Greenhouse Foundations

Remember, most greenhouses are larger than the quoted ‘nominal size’ (ie: 6ft x 8ft) therefore ensure you have the correct external dimensions before preparing a suitable base.

Concrete Greenhouse Foundation

Solid concrete foundation

Solid concrete greenhouse foundations are simple and strong. We use timber shuttering with wet poured concrete to a chosen size, and finish using a power float/screed. This provides a completely smooth finish with minimal drainage which is easy to sweep clean. A return visit is required to remove shuttering and for installation of the greenhouse and is also recommended for sheds, summerhouses and garages.

Slabbed greenhouse foundation

Solid slabbed base

Using smooth, textured (not riven) slabs, this provides a smooth and clean area, that is slightly more decorative than concrete. Some drainage is achieved through the joints in the slabs which are laid on a level bed of sand and cement (not just sand!). Greenhouse installation can be completed within the same day (depending on size). Usually more expensive than concrete due to the additional cost of the slabs.

Outlined greenhouse foundation

Outline base

Using 6″ wide concrete edgings, bedded onto a sand and cement mix, we can create a precision footing for the greenhouse to be sited on and secured to. This leaves plenty of options for internal ground cover (gravel/bark chipping etc). Greenhouse installation can be completed within the same day (depending on size).

Combination base

As the name suggests, a combination of both an outline base and slabbed path, allowing for a mix of working areas and gravel/bark chipping ground covering. This provides lots of drainage and flexibility. Greenhouse installation can be completed within the same day (depending on size).

Dwarf wall greenhouse foundation

Decorative foundations

If you’re looking for something a little more decorative, you may like to consider a dwarf wall, quarry tiled base or brick sets/pamments. We are happy to discuss any specific requirements you may have to create a fully bespoke greenhouse foundation as part of our ground-up installation service.

Frequently Asked Questions about greenhouse installation

Is my new greenhouse supposed to be watertight?

The simple answer is No. Greenhouse manufacturers state that greenhouses are not made to be 100% watertight.

Some water ingress is likely to occur at the corner joints, roof vents and along the base rail where it meets the foundation. Being clean and new, it’ll take some time for the small gaps to ‘silt up’ which in turn will help reduce water ingress.

This shouldn't be viewed as an issue. Natural airflow and ingress/exit of moisture isn't a problem and helps to prevent a stale, stagnant environment.

Greenhouses are a completely different construction to that of a conservatory or similar.

Please note we don’t offer the service of sealing the base to the foundation.

Tips for maintaining your greenhouse

Taking care of your greenhouse may not be the highest priority when there's seeds to be sowing, but it is crucial for the well-being of your plants. Regularly cleaning your greenhouse can significantly enhance the growing environment by eliminating algae, moss, and grime. This not only allows more light to enter but also helps in managing pests and diseases.

For effective cleaning, it is best to choose a damp morning when the dirt and algae are softer and easier to remove. Prepare a solution of warm soapy water and use a brush or sponge to clean all of the surfaces. Rinse with a hose or pressure washer for thorough cleaning.

Additionally, don't forget to clear any debris from the gutters, downpipes, and water butts to ensure proper water flow and prevent blockages.
